A quintessential country pub in the city, filled with ice cold beer and a warm ambience in equal measure, where friendly banter bounces off the walls.

There’s a hint of trepidation as the eye falls on a wall-mounted photograph of a lion strutting its stuff on the front bar counter, but it’s wholly misplaced as The Southwark Hotel on Port Road in Thebarton turns out to be anything but.

It’s the kind of place where you’ll happily pop in for a ‘Southwark Sandwich’ (more of that later…) and end up whiling away an afternoon in conversation with chatty publican Sam Ferguson – and we did just that, during which time he thankfully told us that the lion on the bar was from a circus held across the way in Bonython Park and the shoot was wholly promotional!

We should have stayed for the evening, too, for that is when The Southwark’s legendary ‘Open Mike’ live music sessions get underway, with interested – and mostly talented – musicians stepping up on stage to bash out a few of their melodic numbers.

Family owned and operated – the Fergusons live on site – The Southwark Hotel specialises in serving South Australian beers, wines and spirits, which might explain why it’s a favoured destination for parochial Adelaide and Port Adelaide fans who tend to drop in for a beer before the game, catch the tram to Adelaide Oval for the footy and return to relax around the cosy fireplace after the final siren has sounded.

Well, the Port fans are there, win, lose or draw, Sam tells us; the Crows only when their boys have won, he adds!

And while Covid restrictions have meant the kitchen is currently open for lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Friday only, The Southwark’s country pub reputation is further boosted by pub fare that’s always fresh and tasty and always of a consistent, high quality.

So, with the hotel dating back to 1885, Sam and his family invite you to relive a little history and, just like many did some 100 years ago, jump on the tram, come in, pull up a stool and enjoy a Southwark Sandwich, which, for the novice, is a suitably chilled beer – or two – for lunch…
