That’s the call from Sprout Cooking School on Sir Donald Bradman Drive, where co-owners, dietician Themis Chryssidis and Callum Hann – he of MasterChef runner-up fame – offer what is described as Adelaide’s next level food encounter.

It’s a place where the relationship between food and health is celebrated, where skills, knowledge and motivation are shared in the quest for a long and healthy life; where would-be cooks learn about the produce they’re using, understand where they come from, prepare and consume the chosen dish and walk away having experienced a unique, 100 per cent hands-on food adventure.

As Themis says, no cooking skills are required. In fact, the Sprout philosophy is to remove people from their comfort zones and challenge them by keeping the dish and its ingredients under wraps until participants arrive for the class.

“We want them to come willing to learn. We want to change perceptions and opinions towards certain ingredients and nothing gives us as much satisfaction as seeing, let’s say, a mushroom sceptic fall in love with the flavoursome fungi after a Sprout experience.”

Given its strong food culture and the fact that Sprout is a seasonally based business, current classes have a distinctly winter feel, with students of all things culinary learning about and preparing winter warmers such as curries, stews and one-pot wonders.

Beyond offering classes to children – predominantly during school holidays – adults and corporates, Sprout hosts a smorgasbord of special events focused on food and drink, among them an evening where the dishes prepared are paired with red wines.

A similar experience has whiskey as the drop of choice.

Sprout caters for those more inclined to be waited on, too, offering special dinners where diners observe the meal being prepared, interact, chat with and question the chefs – often guest chefs – and enjoy a truly exceptional evening that none of the many quality food destinations and restaurants Adelaide is blessed with can match.
