There’s no better way to take in the myriad sights, sounds and smells of the seaside than on a state-of-the-art All Terrain X2 Segway.

That’s the confident promise from co-owner Cindy Chynoweth – she runs the business, with operations in the Barossa, the Adelaide Riverbank precinct and Glenelg, with her partner Shane – who says the hour-long six kilometre jaunt across Glenelg and neighbouring beachfront suburbs gives locals and visitors a great feel for what’s on offer and the area’s rich history while also giving them some fun playtime on the beach.

The complete experience takes about 90 minutes, with the first half hour devoted to providing one-on-one training to the riders to give them the skills – amazingly easy, in fact – to undertake the tour. Indeed, Segway Sensation SA’s oldest rider was 88 years of age, the youngest just 10 – and that’s because the mechanics of the battery-powered Segway require a weight of at least 40 kilograms to function.

Each tour is limited to seven customers, all equipped with the necessary safety gear and headsets that allow the tour guide at the front of the procession to communicate with the riders and share interesting information. A guide is also placed at the tail of the convey to keep the group together and safe.

You will all meet on the lawns between Moseley Square and the beach, before heading along the  coastal path to Broadway Café, meandering back through the quiet side streets to the lock at the Patawalonga River, and heading up to the boat ramp at West Beach.

It’s here that the playtime takes place, with riders free to roam the mostly deserted beach’s compacted sand and frolic near the gently lapping waves, after which they enjoy a leisurely cruise back to base, stopping to enjoy historical sites and learn a little about the area’s fascinating history.

The tours, at $99 per person, run at 10am, 12 noon and 3.00pm on weekends during winter and at the same times from Thursday to Sunday in the summer months.
