Pony and Cole has come a long way since co-owners Nicolle Hahn and Julie Pieda stumbled upon a filthy 1960s warehouse in Hindmarsh’s Manton Street, surveyed the scene and took in the Peppertree growing through the wall before looking each other in the eye and, in unison, giving a ‘this is it’ nod.

The entrepreneurial spirit evident that day some three years ago, backed by a combination of the culinary creativity of head chef Nicolle and Julie’s design skills, has seen the building transformed into a little hub of creativity that, collectively known as 6 Manton, offers the outstanding Pony and Cole café, Julie’s interior design studio named Koush and a printmaking studio.

Open seven days a week, Pony and Cole is today an institution in Adelaide’s inner west, frequented as much by local office workers and residents as those in the city and eastern suburbs who’ve got wind of its uniqueness, tried it out and instantly become regulars.

They are all drawn to its great energy and equally sumptuous breakfast, brunch and lunch menus, where each item has been thought through to present patrons with traditional dishes with cheeky twists and some remarkably out-there stuff.

The common thread is food full of fun and flavour, food made by those passionate about hospitality, keen to add little touches that elevate the dishes to another level. House-made sausages bring gastronomic flair to the big traditional breakfasts; while the sweet potato rosti, topped with avocado, Pico de Galo, house-made dukkah and an egg, is hailed as an if-it-gets-removed-from-the-menu-there’ll-be-a-riot dish; and another favourite, the pork belly tacos, overflow with lettuce, jalapenos, white onion pickles, salsa verde cruda and siracha mayo.

The ingenuity extends to the drinks menu, where the cleverly named Bloody Mare, with touches of olives, celery, lemon wedge and a bacon shard added to the classic Bloody Mary said to provide the perfect cure to those seedy Sundays.
