Nijumaru, in Japanese, pretty much translates into “good work” or “well done”.
And that, to use the ‘pretty much’ term again, is what owner Sen Ge and his team hear on a daily basis as guests fold their napkins to signal the end of a hearty eat-as-much-as-you-can meal that may well involve sampling each of the more than 50 delectable dishes on offer.
The modern and spacious restaurant on Glenelg’s Jetty Road at the bustling Moseley Square end is the latest addition to Adelaide’s bourgeoning Japanese dining scene and has evolved from what was previously an a la carte eatery under the Mugan House brand.
The evolution has been intentional, driven by Sen’s passion to take the myriad flavours and textures of authentic, expertly crafted fresh and tasty Japanese cooking and introduce them to as many local palates as possible – and at a price that most can afford.
For just $38 for adults, $33 for pensioners and considerably less for children, diners get to sample perhaps the most comprehensive spread of Japanese cuisine in town, with everything from sushi to desserts, catching the eye and satisfying the appetite.
Start with chilled dishes like Beef Tataki, Japanese Loftus Root and Seaweed Soba and Tofu Salad. Move on to Fried Chicken Wings, Takoyaki and the deep-fried eggplant with sweet muso, Nasu Den Gaku. Venture over to Chicken Teriyaki, Prawn Skewers, Tofu Steak and Saute Spinach.
Or simply settle on a favourite and keep ordering it to your heart’s content while washing it down with one of the many Japanese beers and wide variety of award-winning sakes. The choice is yours at a restaurant that exists to please.
Don’t confuse what’s on offer with a buffet as what you get at Nijumaru is an endless stream of meals prepared fresh immediately following the order being placed…and all presented with colour and vibrancy.
That’s the secret behind the cries of “nijumaru” that ring around this unique offering.
