Stacey Howard recalls the moment. Cataloguing books at the bookstore she worked in, a thought suddenly entered her head. How cool would it be if people could browse for and buy books while, at the same time, enjoy snacks, cakes, light meals, coffees and even the occasional glass of wine?
After all, there’s nothing like that in Adelaide, and it’s sustainable too, with books being rebirthed and re-read…
That classic thought some 10 years back is now embodied in the aptly-named coffee shop and second-hand bookshop, Mockingbird Lounge, the name being a nod to another classic, Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.
The unique venue, established in 2012 and recently relocated to larger premises on the opposite side of Broadway in Glenelg South, has since gained a well-earned reputation as something of a creative hub, hosting an array of events from art exhibitions and displays of gifts and jewellery handcrafted by locals, to a meeting place for various book clubs and creative writing groups.
Its charm lies in the authentic ambience, the cosy and homely furnishings complementing rooms lined with heaving bookshelves and intriguing artwork to offer casual dining in what can only be described as a slice of artistic heaven!
The various dining area rooms each celebrate genres such as children’s literature, crime and thriller, general fiction and non-fiction. And while the food and beverage menus are limited, the quality is anything but. Everything from the cakes and scones to the light lunch soups, toasted sandwiches and croissants is home-baked and prepared, from the freshest seasonal ingredients. The array of fine teas and coffees and quality wine list won’t disappoint either.
Mockingbird Lounge also features a new art exhibition each month, with the opening always in the evening of the first Friday of the month, where locals and visitors get the chance to mingle with the artist and each other while enjoying the wine and cheese spread laid on to launch the new exhibition.
