Winter might be a quieter season at the Holden Street Theatres complex on the city’s western fringes given our propensity to stay indoors rather than head out into the wind and rain on a dark and cold night.
But for those hardy souls happy to rug up and face the elements, albeit briefly, the effort is sure to be rewarded at a venue that’s passionate about putting on great community theatre and supporting the arts.
Indeed, as lovers of the theatre, the team at Holden Street Theatres are fervent about providing theatregoers with the best possible experience.
The arts complex in Holden Street, Hindmarsh is an open access venue, which means anyone can hire its various performance spaces for their productions – and while all genres feature, most tend to be drama and comedy.
It also boasts a spread of venues catering for both larger audiences and those of a more snug and intimate nature, ensuring that most performances unfold before full or near-full houses and generate that atmosphere so special to live theatre.
A highlight of the winter program is local production company, Adapt Enterprises’ mini festival featuring some 17 shows across theatre, magic, music, cabaret and film.
Running from 21 to 31 July the program includes M is for Magicians, a spectacular magic show that brings together four of Adelaide's best magicians who will perform jaw-dropping sleight of hand, comedy magic, mind reading, contact juggling and much more.
The mini festival also includes Launch, a short film experience featuring films made by local SA filmmakers.
If you’re after an evening of stellar community theatre, where the staff and volunteers make you feel right at home and the performers showcase just what the arts in South Australia are capable of – and at affordable prices – you’re encouraged to grab your coat, wrap a scarf around your neck, pull on a beanie and head to the warmth that is the Holden Street Theatres.
