Lovers of fabulous fungi will be in heaven this July when The Highway Hotel in Plympton rolls out Mushroom Month, showcasing a spread of dishes paying homage to this culinary delicacy.
A peek at the menu suggests you could start with westside mushrooms served with soft herb polenta, crispy pancetta and jus. The tastebuds suitably tantalised, you might then move on to completing the night out with a duck and mushroom ravioli, a mushroom masala curry or even a mushroom pizza.
But there’s much more to The Highway, with its expansive pub, a cosy cocktail lounge, an outdoor deck, a live music venue and a full table service bistro just a hint of what awaits visitors to this popular venue ideally situated on Anzac Highway midway between the city and the beach.
The Highway also hosts regular events such as its well-frequented Thursday Gin Night, where boutique SA gins are available at just $10 a drink. The Fizzy Friday, with bubbles from leading local wineries selling for just $7 a glass, also has oysters at $10 for half a dozen; while Saturday Vibes features live acoustics from 6pm and a DJ from 9pm until late, and the Sunday Session on the deck laid-back afternoon live music while enjoying $20 cocktail jugs.
The winner of the Australian Hotels Association’s SA Award in the Best Meeting and Venue category for 2021, The Highway’s bistro will, in addition to a recently revamped menu, offer an exciting winter program of wine dinners, where some of the state’s most earthy reds are paired with a selection of hearty comfort foods.
For the more casually inclined, the outdoor deck is guaranteed to be abuzz on weekends when sports lovers flock to enjoy a few beers or wines, sample pub favourites such as schnitzels, burgers and pizzas and watch the footy on one of the biggest screens in Adelaide.
The locals tell us, too, that The Highway’s drive-thru bottle shop, renovated over the past 12 months, takes some beating. Aside from boasting arguably the largest range of craft beers in town, it’s also staffed by some of the friendliest and most knowledgeable alcohol aficionados around.
