There’s a primal earthiness and special magic that comes from cooking over an open charcoal fire, where the heat and flames encourage the natural characteristics of the ingredient – invariably meat – to enjoy centre stage.
Just ask the Serbians – more specifically, the Stojanovic/Marchioro families who have been operating barbecue restaurants in Adelaide for some 60 years.
It all started when Bozidar Stojanovic opened the original Barbecue Inn on Hindley Street in 1958 before selling it in 1973 and, after a short break and a trip overseas, returned to establish the Glenelg BBQ Inn on busy Jetty Road in October 1975.
It has been there ever since and is now operated by his grandson, Martin Marchioro and his family. And while the décor has changed, the traditions perfected in the hills of Serbia live on in the many delectable meat dishes prepared for the host of loyal and new diners who happily sing its praises as the home of Adelaide’s finest charcoal barbecued steaks.
Serving only the finest pasture and grain fed beef, Glenelg BBQ Inn’s meat is perfectly aged and butchered on site. This ensures that only the best quality steaks find their way onto the charcoal barbecue where, through techniques honed over nearly five decades of fine-tuning the art, they arrive on your plate succulent and overflowing with flavour.
The menu also includes mixed grills, lamb, pork and chicken dishes, shasliks, burgers, salads and a mix of side dishes, among them the always-in-demand chevapchichis made in house from a long-held and closely guarded family recipe handed down over generations.
Glenelg BBQ Inn further boasts an excellent wine list dominated by top South Australian drops from premier regions – and from wineries with similar traditions, such as Landaire in Padthaway and 2 Mates in McLaren Vale. You’ll also find Rieslings from Clare, Pinot Gris’ from the Adelaide Hills and Shiraz’ from the Barossa, to name but a few, all served by a friendly and knowledgeable service team determined to make your dining experience one to remember.
